Filipino massacre claim
NZPA-Reuter Manila An opposition member of the Philippines National Assembly said yesterday that he could provide witnesses to the alleged massacre of 210 people by government soldiers in the central province of Samar last April. The military has dismissed reports of the massacre as pure fabrication, although local newspapers continue to
carry stories about alleged survivors. Reuben Canoy, of the Assembly, said in a letter to the Defence Minister (Mr Juan Ponce Enrile), copies of which were made available to the press, that at least two village chiefs and a Catholic priest had been willing to testify about the killings. Former residents of the village, which government forces are alleged to have bombarded, were also willing
to give evidence if they were granted protection by the authorities, he said. The Defence Ministry described the massacre reports as “deception and propaganda” by the Communist 1 New People’s Army, which operates in the area. It quoted the armed forces chief of staff, General Fabian Ver. as saying that the alleged massacre was too big an event to have escaped hisattention.
