Inquiry committee on. Oakley Hospital named
PA Wellington The three-member committee of inquiry into allegations concerning Oakley Hospital has been announced by the Minister of Health (Mr Malcolm). The committee chairman is Mr R. G. Gallen. Q.C.. of Napier. The president of the Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and Director of Mental Health for South Australia. Dr B. L. Shea, is a member of the committee, as is Miss Rita McEwan, of Wellington, recently retired chief nurse of Porirua Hospital and former World Health Organisation advisor on mental health. The committee will in-
quire into and make recommendations on procedures at Oaklev Hospital as they related to the care, treatment, and management of patients. Mr Malcolm said. It also has specific instruction to investigate the recent death in the hospital of Michael Watene. The committee's proceedings were unlikely to be made public as they would relate to individual patients whose privacy must be respected. Mr Malcolm said. However, the final report to the Minister will be published. The committee is expected to begin taking evidence "within weeks"
