School defeats College

Michael Bell, the Christ’s College centre, is tackled by the Christchurch Boys’ High School centre, Murray Whitley, during the annual rugby match at the College ground yesterday. School withstood a desperate last-minute assault to win the game, 10-6. There was little between the teams in a match of considerable importance to the secondary schools’ championship. Both sets of for-

wards were impressive, but the backs of both sides made many mistakes, and it was not one of the great SchoolCollege matches The result left College with but two wins in the last 25 years. School led, 6-3, at halftime, with two penalty goals by Stewart McLeod against one by Johnathan Gurnesy. Early in the second spell a School tight-head allowed McLeod, the full-back, to run

on the blind side, and he sent Dane Fea over for a fine try. Down, 3-10, College staged a brilliant right-flank attack, in which Gurnsey and Giles Batchelor were prominent. Then, after Gurnsey kicked a second panelty goal, Ralph Shand on the left wing for College looked set to score but he was taken out by a brilliant tackle from the School first five-eighths, Chris Flanagan, who played particularly well on both attack and defence.
