Govt to relocate wapiti, in spite of protests

PA Wellington The Government will relocate Fiordland wapiti, in spite of continuing protests by local deerstalkers. ’ A Deerstalkers’ Association representative. Mr Warren Taylor, met the Minister of Lands (Mr Elworthy) yesterday but failed in a lastditch attempt to persuade the Government to change its policy. “We have given this a lot of thought and think we are doing the right thing.” Mr Elworthy told reporters after the meeting. Mr Taylor had made “reasonable requests to coincide with the point of view held by a lot of peole in Southland.” Mr Elworthy said. However, he had been told that the Government was committed to a course of action it intended to follow. Purebred wapiti are being selected from the Fiordland area and when a sufficient herd has been built up it will be established in the Nelson area. The wapiti are said to have caused considerable damage to the bush in Fiordland. Deerstalkers argue that hunting the big deer in the rugged Fiordland area is a unique experience.
