Sydenham’s good year

Its centennial celebrations may . be over, but the Sydenham Rugby Club continues to have cause for jubilation. Last week-end was particularly good for the club. The senior team won its sixth championship game of the season, and there were four earlier wins in preseason matches.. It’s a long time—longer, in fact, than anyone can remember—since Sydenham has had such a good senior record. -

In addition, the other four Sydenham open grade teams were successful and this is the third-time this year all the open grade teams have had wins on the same day. On Sunday, Sydenham picked up the "club of the

day” award at the Tinwald seven-a-side tournament. It won three finals, senior, under-14 and under-12, and the senior side was made up entirely of members of one family, the Flynns, two of whom, Kieran and Darryl, are from the Sydenham first XV.

Meanwhile, back in Christchurch, Sydenham players were making their presences felt at the eliminations rounds of the Hallensteins goal-kicking competition. Three from the club, Brent Nicol], Bill Nicholson and Peter Hunter, reached the last six in the senior section, and another member, Michael Dorreen, qualified for the final of the under-16 section.
