Clyde dam
Sir,—Never have so many regarded politicians and their Parliament with such contempt. Government and Opposition vie to discover means of frustrating proper legal procedures. One would pass special legislation, if it can muster enough dupes in support; the other, scorning even this gesture, would simply make an order-in-council. What cynical hypocrisy , is this sudden enthusiasm for irrigation to a the , dam. The Otago nent "Board takes its measure, when criticising the M.W.D.’s environmental impact report om Luggate and Queensberry. “The Government is continuing its policy of single-purpose development, as was the case in the Clyde proposal. No commitment is made in respect of any other purpose apart from hydro power, and thus opportunities for multiple-objective development (power, irrigation, rural water supply) have again been omitted.” The upper Clutha is to be sacrificed, not in the interests of Central Otago, but either to spill water to waste or export electricity to the North Island. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. July 11. 1982.
