Ballet in N.Z.
Sir,—l have read many letters bemoaning the cuts the New Zealand Ballet have had to make — dancers and orchestra. On Thursday evening I listened to a programme on the arts from Christchurch. Helen Holmes handed Russell Kerr (Southern Ballet), on a platter, the head of John the Baptist, in the person of the New Zealand Ballet, for him to comment on the great falling off in standards and — he didn’t! He praised the national company, said the dancers had never been stronger. Having been involved in theatre and being very aware how many, many poor spirited axemen Jie in wait to hack down both)small and large trees, I was grateful to Russell Kerr for his generosity and honesty and the fact that he cared more about the art of ballet than any opportunity to score easy snide points. I am sure the New Zealand Ballet must regret all cut-backs which are forced upon them to survive. — Yours, etc., EDITH CAMPION. July 2, 1982.
