Clutha dam
Sir, — I sympathise with E. Cox’s comments (July 6) on the Clutha Dam and unemployment. But let us be realistic. Can you expect a Government whose members are bound to its narrow one eyed crumbling “think big” policy to think about using power to benefit “Mr Average New Zealander." National’s M.P.s cannot even think for themselves for fear of being, sacked. To use Clutha power to electrify railways is too far sighted and beneficial to us. It also is uncontaminated with foreign control and that just will not do. They are too tied up in their ritualistic power, grabbing bureaucracy. Any attempts at free thought to rid our country of rampant unemployment and National’s debt, are doomed at birth. Nearly everyone knows that Social Credit has been presenting this as policy for the last three elections. — Yours, etc., N. W. MINCHINGTON. July 6, 1982.
Sir,-Man-made laws are not sacrosanct in granting inalienable rights—seemingly appropriate at the time to a privileged few but, as now, at the expense. of the majority threatening present and future job opportunities. Legalisers appear always ready to do legal battle blit final responsibility and authority rests wifh the Government. One member exercising his democratic freedom refuses to support the Government in what he believes is a matter of principle while another wrestles with his conscience under threat of expulsion from his party if he cannot silence his conscience and vote against the Government. Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage and later sought consolation with tears without avail.-Labour has ruled by coercion from the beginning. Present performance indicates that another undemocratic Labour Government would be a disaster for New Zealand.—Yours, etc., L. H. CARMICHAEL. July 6. 1982. .
