Exhibition by 14 artists
Exhibition — “Works on ; Paper” at the Brooke/Gif- i ford Gallery until July 16. Reviewed by David Brokenshire.- CT This is a mixed exhibition of the work of 14 artists and apart from, all the exhibits being on paper the paintings, drawings -. and prints have little in .common. However, each artist has exciting . offerings. ' - Marilynn Webb is. showing four hand-tinted monotypes. They are small works softer and more delicate than the earlier stark Lake-. Mahinerangi series. It is good to see Philip Claimant's work -again. His screenprint. “Black Crucifixion,” barely contains his pulsing vitality. All his work seems, charged with a high emotion but in this print with its-■ restricted ’• •colour, .the en in his custnm-
ary flame-shaped forms is readily apparent. Richard Killen continues with his cutout theme. These works are on a scale which would grace any domestic interior. The draughtsmanship is superb and they are lively, sophisticated, and very satisfying. -Gordon' Walters’ two screenprints both exhibit the excitement of the razoredged precision of his finely honed designs.' Ralph Hotere is showing two • { Black Window Drawings.” In a sense they refer back to the early “Crucifixion” series yet here they starkly and poignantly relate to Aramoana. These are but a few of the works which I enjoyed. I am sure that most folk will find entrancing work in this exhibition of “Works on ' Paper." ." ' ' ’ ‘ •
