Music week

The first week of October is National Music Week, promoted by the National Music Council of New Zealand.

The idea is to generate a national festival of formal and informal music, both classical and popular. One event of particular interest will be the exhibition of New Zealand composition, to be held in the Alexander Turnbull Library, in Wellington. It includes manuscripts, scores, papers, sound recordings and photographs.

Other events already notified are programmes of New Zealand music to be broadcast by Radio New Zealand. Among these is a specially commissioned work by the young Christchurch composer, Anthony Ritchie, and locally-written pieces to be played by the New Zealand Jazz Orchestra. In addition, Radio New Zealand's commercial network manager has asked stations to support local artists planning performances

during the week. In Christchurch the music week events will include a Maurice Till recital, Univer-

sity of Canterbury School of Music concerts and a concert by the Christchurch Harmonic Chorale.
