Freeze ‘will last 3 months’
PA Wellington The Engineers' Union's national secretary. Mr Ernie Ball, says that a worker on $250 a week would need a 30 per cent income lax reduction in October just to retain the buying power he had in October last year. He predicted that the 30.000 members of his union covered by the metal trades award would react angrily to the 12-month wage freeze announced by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldooni. Mr Ball said that after the scheduled October award negotiations, now over-ridden
by the freeze, members on $250 a week could have expected an increase of 15 per cent to cover inflation since last October. He said that the 12-month price freeze would break down in three months, saying that retailers and professional people could sidestep it simply by proving hardship. Mr Ball said the freeze on wages and prices was a "total admission of failure" by the Government. He also termed it"a "con job." "This selective freeze must be strongly resisted." he said.
