Pistols banned

NZPA-Reuter San Francisco San Francisco yesterday became the first main American city to ban most residents from owning pistols. The city council, the Board of Supervisors, passed the hill by a vote of six to four. The Mayor (Mrs Dianne Feinstein) later signed it into law. saying: "We have had enough of death, dismemberment and desecration in our societv."

Mrs’ Feinstein took office after her predecessor. George Moscone. and a supervisor. Harvey Milk, were shot dead by a former citv supervisor in 1978.

The police said that of 126 murders in the city last year at least 40 were committed with pistols. Opponents of the law. including the National Rifle Association, said they would immediately challenge it in the courts.

Pistol owners among the city’s 700.000 residents will have 120 days in which to get rid of their weapons before they become liable to 30 days jail and a SUSSOO (SNZ67S) fine.

The law does not apply to rifles and shot-guns. Gun collectors. members of target practice groups and shop owners with police permits to have a gun are exempt.
