World Cup action
NZPA Madrid Two one-sided matches opened the second round of the World Cup yesterday with Poland and France winning- . . Poland was majestic in its Group A 3-0 victory over Belgium, in Barcelona, with Zbigniew Boniek scoring all three goals and showing just why it is Juventus had no qualms about signing a $2 million cheque for his services. The French were all over the Austrians in their Group D match in Madrid, but failed time and again with scoring chances and had to be content with a single-goal win. Poland played the first four hours of the tournament
without scoring a goal and the experts who said that the troubled domestic scene the side left at home would upset its performance seemed about to be proved right, but against Peru it hit form and five goals and has now scored a total of eight goals in two hours of football. Now it is on the brink of the semi-finals, its next match against the Soviet Union on Monday morning (N.Z. time) being the decisive encounter. France’s victory also gave it high hopes of advancing. It needs only to beat Northern Ireland in its group, and having beaten the Irish, 4-0, in a friendly just last month, it must be facing the fixture with confidence.
