Kelly Gibson aged 13, became the youngest holder of a black belt in Taekwondo in the South Island after a grading at the St Luke’s Church hall in Christchurch last evening. Gibson, who is instructed by Craig Sutherland at the Rolleston club, has been training for two years and a half, and his mother, Diane (a green belt), also does Taekwondo, the Korean version of karate. Gibson won a children’s‘black belt, normally not attempted until the age of 15. The examination was conducted by the seventh dan black belt, Mr John Lee, the founder of the New Zealand Taekwondo Federation, who made a special trip from Wellington.
