Record tote turnover
By W. R. CARSTON Tuesday racing at Ashburton might not have proved popular with everyone but it was certainly a boomer as far as the on-course turnover was concerned yesterday. The $149,613 bet by course patrons yesterday was a record for a winter meeting and. although not confirmed, is thought to be the fourth highest on-course turnover on record. The record. $202,425. was established on the first day of the club's spring meeting in 1980. The $150,000 mark; was exceeded on the second day of that meeting and also on'the first day of the spring meeting last September. The on-course turnover at the 1980 winter meeting was $105,711 but the $79,958 turnover at the corresponding fixture last year was a disaster financially.
