Mapping of wetlands started

A mapping programme has started for the management- of North Canterbury wetlands.

The North Canterbury Catchment Board is mapping wetlands near Hanmer Springs after allowing a landowner to drain a 40ha swamp in the area. The Queen Elizabeth 11, Trust will help assess the wetlands in order of importance when mapping is finished.

The board's resources planning manager. Mr R. W. Cathcart, said that the work would provide a management framework for wetlands when considering future water-right applications.

The board had originally asked the trust to investigate the value of local wetlands but it had been too shortstaffed.

Board staff were also preparing a policy draft which included other wetlands although no more mapping work was planned at this stage.
