Standards set

A major aim of the modern funeral director is to ease the burden of responsibility and grief for the family and friends of the deceased. The aim of the Funeral Directors' Association of New Zealand is to maintain and improve the standards of funeral directing along this line, and to this end it has a code of ethics and a code of practice by which every member must abide. Since its establishment in the 19305. the association has been made up of almost every company, partnership and sole proprietorship directing funerals in 'New Zealand _ at present, about 120 members. Along with J. Lamb and Son, Ltd, recently moved to new premises, members in the central Canterbury area are G. Barrell and Sons, Ltd; Lamb and Hayward, Ltd; John Rhind, Ltd; and more recently, Blair-Kelly Funeral Services, Ltd - all in Christchurch.

Gulliver and Tyler. Ltd. is based in Kaiapoi and Rangiora, and Baker Bros and O'Reilly, Ltd, in Ashburton.

Over the years, association members have rendered a complete and compassionate service to the bereaved, and haye taken part in educational programmes to help maintain their standards~of service.

Local and national meetings of the association are held to discuss negotiations with central government and local authorities on such topics as the Health and Burial Act. emergency services and cemetery and cremation regulations. The on-going professional education programme run at the Central Institute of Technology is also under constant review.
