Kampuchea
Sir,—Further to Stuart McMillan's illuminating analysis of the Kampuchea situation ("The Press." June 26), the Heng Samrin Government, however assisted by Vietnam, has earned international recognition by serving the basic needs of the people—food, housing, welfare, in a humane environment. However, A.S.E.A.N. antagonism towards Vietnam overrides the welfare" and wishes of war-ravaged Kampucheans. The “coalition” created by A.S.E.A.N. is a cosmetic device, apparently designed to reimpose the Khmer Rouge (Communist) “reign of terror” over Kampuchea. Only by a large war, supported by the United States and China, could A.S.E.A.N. hope to accomplish this outrage. New Zealand's support for A.S.E.A.N., for U.S. policy, and for Khmer Rouge communism could result in military involvement and major risks to New Zealand. A neutral, peacemaking New Zealand would be more constructive and preferable.—Yours, etc., LARRY ROSS, Secretary, . New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone Committee. June 26, 1982.
