Forest Service may be sued over debt
Westport reporter The Inangahua County Council will take the Forest Service to court if a $20,000 debt is not paid soon. The Forest Service owes the council $20,000 for outstanding “fifths and tenths” payments due early last year. A year ago. the council resolved to take the matter to court, but this action was cancelled when the Forest Service offered a settlement out of court. However, the council is still waiting for the money and has consulted its solici-
tor, who has transferred the matter from Greymouth to the District Court in Christchurch. Some councillors suggested taking the complaint to the Ombudsman or to TVNZ’s “'Fair Go” programme, but the council decided that a court hearing would be the most effective action. According to the Inangahua County Clerk, Mr Charles Prattley, the Forest Service is in a dilemma over what to call the payment. While it is reluctant to call it "fifths and tenths” arrears, it has no other title.
