Blaze guts workshop
Fire gutted the workshop of the Caltex Service Station in Halswell Road last evening, destroying three ears and damaging another. In the photograph firemen look for “hot spots” after putting out the blaze.
Two employees noticed the fire when they stayed on at the. station to repair a troublesome cash register. - X ;/? One of the men looked across to the workshop and saw smoke and flames coming from the concrete-block building. Units from Sockburn, Spreydon, and Harewood attended the fire about 8 p.m., but it had engulfed the building by the time they arrived.
The workshop is some distance from the five forecourt pumps which contain petrol, kerosene, and diesel. No-one h&d to be moved from the area, but the road was closed by the Ministry of Transport.
Several items of expensive workshop equipment were also destroyed. A pall of smoke and steam hung over the area. At the height of the blaze the heat melted aluminium window frames and cracked a window pane in the service station foyer. The building was erected in 1969.
