League basketball squad
John London, aged 24, (Continental Caterers Rangiora), has been included in the nine-man 3ZM Canterbury senior men’s Countrywide national basketball league squad to play Blue Herons Porirua at Porirua tomorrow afternoon. The defection of Gilbert Gordon and Andy Bennett to the New Zealand side, has required the Canterbury coach, Murray Mackay, to add London to his final side for the away match. London, an aggressive guard for Rangiora, is relatively short in height as
guards go (1.7 m but his play this season has been of sufficient quality to gain him a place in the final lineup. John Whelan, who has been troubled by a knee injury, has now virtually recovered and the Canterbury captain should again provide the pivot of the attack. Mr Mackay is reasonably confident about tomorrow’s result. “There’s been a lot of soul-searching after our defeat by Auckland Metro on Saturday, and we hope we’ve ironed out the faults,” he said.
