Israel and Lebanon
Sir,—Menachem Begin’s mother and brother died in Auschwitz; his father died in.a concrete-loaded sack in a river during Hitler’s era. Begin survived starvation and Stalin’s Siberia. Consequently he viewed with disfavour and violently opposed British Bevinist policies denying entry to Palestine to his fellow Jewish survivors, as Churchill verbally opposed these policies in Parliament. Is lan Hood (June 14) aware of Begin’s speech (April 25, 1948)? Extracts read, “Men of the Irgun. We are going out to conquer Jaffa”.... “In battle show no more mercy to the enemy than he shows mercy to our people. But spare women and children. Whoever raises his hands in surrender has saved his life. You will not harm him.” Furthermore, the Bible in Ezekiel 38 (revised version) names Rosh, the ancient name for Russia, together with Persia, Ethiopia and Libya as attempting the final. destruction of Israel. So why speculate further? — Yours, etc., B. CRAWLEY. June 15, 1982.
