The latest Newz
The former Christchurch band, the Newz, have signed a letter of intention in Australia; to be contracted to a major .record company, according? to .the ’latest “Newzletter,” the fan club’s information sheet. The. reasons for signing with the company were that it offered, the best .deal: the manager made a good impression; the company was amalgamating with two other recording businesses to form a big distribution warehouse; and the company was forming its own label, sign-' ing six bands to that label; and concentrating only on those bands, the "Newzletter" said.. The Newz were rehearsing three days a week writing new r songs, and at the record company’s ' expense they would go to a studio of the band's choice to record demonstration tapes for the proposed album.
The band; had been practising new songs at a complex of rehearsal studios. known as the Dane Centre. Bryan Colechin, the bass
guitarist, is quoted as saying: "Phil (Jones) and I. have come up with a song that we think is our best effort yet. The song is called ‘When She Says Goodbye,' and although it is up-tempo and rocky, it has a really nice melody and some (excellent Beatle-like harmonies,” The Newz . have a new manager , (name . not given) who was proving helpful, the "Newzletter” said.
They had been playing with a number of band’s in Australia, including The Runners. Models, Hunters and Collectors, Jimmy and the Boys, Mother Goose, and Moving Pictures’ .'((. The Newz played at the final night of the Bananas nightclub in Melbourne, jamming with sortie top bands until 6 a.m.:”" ' Bananas was a orice-a-week residency for them. .
