Rise in chicken prices boost costs
Hot tonic drinks. Bell tea. and chickens have all risen in price this month. Nestle's Milo and Cadbury Bournvita have risen nearly 8.5 per cent in price -A 300 g packet of either brand can now cost up to $1.93. ■ One of the first tea price changes for some time came from the Bell Tea Company. An estimated 5 per cent rise in the cost of Bell tea packets took effect this week. Bell tea bags and Ambertips tea also rose slightly in price. A chicken price rise was the biggest factor in boosting this month’s shopping basket from $153.25 to $156.98: General Foods has recommended a top retail price of $5.61 for its 'No. 6 Tegel chickens.
Golden Coast chickens have matched Tegel with a similar 5 per cent price rise. Chicken specials are common in many Christchurch supermarkets but the new prices will still make a difference.
Betty Crocker cake mixes have been revamped in a competitive move against the Edmonds competition. W. F. Tucker has narrowed the range to five mixes, three of its best-selling and two new chocolate and madeira recipes. New packaging: has been introduced complete with micro-wave oven cooking instructions. More new prices from Levers, N.Z., Ltd', had 'the biggest impact on its beauty products, where the recom-
mended retail price for a 60ml stick of Reward deodorant went from $3.35 to $3.52. Sunsilk hair sprays and hair conditioners were also affected.
The company's soap powders, Drive and Persil Automatic, rose by a smaller margin of about Bc.
Other minor price increases were for Chesdale cheese, Blue Bonnet and Craig's jam. *
