Shuttle cost rockets
NZPA Washington The . cost of renting the American space shuttle will triple by 1985 from the present ” SNZ4O million to about SNZI2O million, but will remain competitive with the challenging West European Ariane rocket and offer more services, the Government space agency has reported. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said that the main reasons for the increase to customers wishing to place payloads in
orbit were inflation, an unrealistically low initial charge, and a reduced launch rate. In 1977 the Administration set an original price of SNZ24 million to rent the manned spaceship’s cargo bay for scientific and other satellites. The new price would be competitive with three unmanned rockets which also carry satellites — the American Delta and At-las-Centaur and the European Space Agency’s Ariane, said a spokesman.
