Mary’s music wins

A seventh-form pupil at Bumside High School, .Mary Davison, has been awarded first place in the original section of the 1982 Wale’s Bank School Music Contest. , Her . composition, for soprana./and altoi; with piano accompaniment,' entitled “Burial,” was described by ’ the judge, Mr Philip Norman, as “first-rate.” s

Mr Norman said that it was “an excellent piece of writing that a university student composer would be proud to have written.” It was “an' exquisitely crafted . accompaniment, commendable for its simplicity and for its poetic wordpainting,” he said. Miss Davison’s entry was chosen from 19 compositions

from throughout New Zealand. First place in the advanced composition section went to Peter Clymont, of Logan Park High School, Dunedin, for “Blue Trio,” a jazz composition for piano, oboe, and clarinet. Both pieces will be performed at the national final of the contest in Wellington, on August 8.
