Social club theft charge
A man alleged to have stolen $987 from the Christchurch Customs Social Club was remanded without plea to June 23 when he appeared before Judge Paterson in the District Court yesterday.
The defendant at the request of counsel (Mr P. J. Egden) was granted interim suppression of his name. Mr Edgen said it was likely that the charge would be defended. The defendant, a first offender, is alleged to have committed the ■ offence between November 1 and December 31, last year.
THREAT CHARGE An unemployed man facing a charge of threatening to kill, assault, and incurring a debt denied the alleged offences. Paul Joseph McMullen, aged 47 (Mr E., Bedo) was remanded at large to August 9 for a defended hearing. It is alleged that McMullen threatened to kill John Harold Webb, that he assaulted Mr Webb, and that he incurred a debt of $6 with a taxi driver. The alleged offences were said to have taken place on June 7.
COMMUNITY SERVICE A woman, aged 50, earlier convicted of being over paid $3152 in domestic purposes benefits by the Department of Social Welfare, was ordered to carry out 75 hours of community service when she appeared for sentence. The woman, who was granted final suppression of her. name, committed the offence over a period of 10 months. The Judge ordered her to pay compensation in full. Counsel (Mr M. J. Glue) said his client had already paid compensation of $BO4
