Delay on C.E.R. start sought

PA Auckland The starting date for the closer economic. relations agreement with Australia should be delayed six months. Mr Laurie Stevens, the chairman of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation N.A.F.T.A. — C.E.R. committee, said yesterday. The starting date should be July 1; 1983. he said, speaking at a C.E.R. seminar.

Addressing the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Templeton), he said, that, after all the work, he would hate to see C.E.R. "crash at the barrier." There was a substantive case for a delay, he said.

"Australia will accept that .if we get a more orderly start to the agreement, we will make more progress. "1 know as a manufacturer. that getting co-opera-tion from the Government is mighty slow when they have got ground rules. But when we. have not got rules, we. are on the brink of a'firstclass . shambles," said Mr Stevens.

Il was also important for trade groups io be given time to consider the implications of industry rationalisations. he said.
