Lost sign found
Kevin Buckley, a Post Office lineman, holds the old name shield that used to hang outside the Sign of the Bellbird on the Summit Road at Kennedys Bush. Mr Buckley has the old sign in front of the Sign of the Takahe. When he was doing work there in a basement service, space a few weeks ago, he came across what has been “missing” since the old Bellbird tearooms were demolished in the late 19505. Mr J. W. Jameson, president of the
Summit Road Society, said that his organisation might include the sign some day in a Summit Road historic display, In the meantime, the distinctive sign may be displayed by the lessee of the Sign of the Takahe, Mr Thanasas Hadjichristos. Christchurch City Council records do not suggest how the sign became forgotten in the Takahe’s basement, but it may have been put away for safekeeping years, ago.
