Deaf bowler wins singles title

An almighty cheer broke the silence in the Pioneer Stadium in Christchurch last evening when Barry Kinnaird, of Manukau, drew a magnificent toucher to clinch victory in the singles final of the national indoor bowls championships. However; the applause would have been largely lost on the 43-year-old Kinnaird. He is almost totally deaf. Nevertheless, he would still have got the message that he was a popular winner, even if he did beat a local player, Eddie Ashby. Kinnaird’s club is the Deaf Welfare Centre in Manakau and another member of this club, Sen Smith, also deaf, finished equal third after being beaten by Ashby in the semi-finals. If falling just short of being a great final, it was still a very good one. Kinnaird,, who won, 17-12, was steadier than Ashby, whose club is Northcote, although Ashby put his mark on the game, with some brilliant

shots. - He produced one of them on the very first end to score a three and again on the seventh end he . played a perfectly-weighted bowl to push Kinnaird’s counter out of the way and reap another three, Kinnaird reached the final with a runaway 19-2 winagainst Bill Bowling (North Taranaki) and Ashby, whose best performances up to yesterday were two Canterbury fours titles, .gave a very assured display to beat Smith, 11-6. . A round earlier Ashby had showed his mettle under pressure when he scored a three on the last end to beat Robert Frelan (Waikato), the 1979 singles champion, 11-9. The Truth Cup; for the woman to fare best in the championship, was won by Marjorie Mac Kay (Manukau) for the second time;; Mrs MacKay' gotjthe decisionon a cduntback from Ola Sullivan (Waikato) and Marian Patrick (South Can-

terbury), all three reaching the last 16. Today the fours championship will begin with the 485 entries contesting the qualifying rounds.
