Linwood on brink of first squash trophy

Linwood is on the very brink of its first men’s division one inter-chib squash trophy after the , latest round of competition.

With just one week remaining in the Blank Trophy competition Linwood enjoys a 10-point lead over the fast-climbing Suburbs and will need to win just one of its four individual matches against Christchurch Football next week. The Linwood lads were without their No. 2. Robbie Burnett, off on a South Island tour with the New Zealand Colts, and in a bid to take the trophy a week early they played ah injured Gary Monk arid promoted Grant Egan and Cliff Leney. Egan turned up trumps to beat Christchurch H's Geoff Hayes in five games, but Monk was obviously hampered by his wrist, though it was weU'strapped up. and he fell to the Irish doctor, Bill Hadden, in four games.

In the end. Leney needed to win at No. 4 against the lefthanded Ed Post for Linwood to take eight points and secure the Blank Trophy. He found the consistency of Post 100 much, but by winning the third game — after’a tortuous struggle arid an incredible eight game balls — Leney ensured Linwood's overall win on a points countback. 119 to 110.

Suburbs was the only team to achieve a 10-pointer on the night with its captain.' Barry Taylor, chalking up another good win, a five-setter against Lyn Sparks (Wigram-Lincoln). AH'his teammates cruised to 3-0 victories/

Another well-placed team. Vistalite Sumner, managed to beat the top Christchurch side alter the No. 2. Ron Marshall, shaded Wayne Seebeck by the narrowest of margins. In the women's competition Burnside I. which will have a bye in two weeks time, has an eight-point lead over Vistalite Sumner which had its sixth 10point score on end. There was a slightly surprising move by the Burnside II team in its game against Sumner. Adele Ellery, a Greymouth girl making her debut for Burnside, was played at No. 2 below the provincially lower-ranked Julie Quinn. Miss Ellery actually went very close to lipsetting the capable Merle Holland, leading 2-7 in the fifth game.

Christchurch 11. without Philippa Idour. performed well to beat High School Old Boys, placed third, by three matches to one. Gina Maaka had a good five-game win over Bette King and Heather Lyon handed Lorraine Cowan her first defeat in seven matches this season. Points:—
