Teacher trainee allowances

Sir,—As a teacher trainee I would like to express my horror over Mr Wellington’s decision more than to halve the present allowance for incoming students from next year. I am' very fortunate to be at Teachers’ College now, because I would have considerable difficulty in surviving on the new bursary system. Future teacher trainees will be limited mostly to school leavers with parents prepared to “keep" them. Most older students and those from lower socio-economic groups, no matter how well suited and qualified to train as teachers, will just not be able to afford it. University students have fought hard to demonstrate their protest to the present standard tertiary grant, so the Government has responded by putting Teachers’ College trainees on the STG as well. At least, unlike teacher trainees, part-time university students are able to go on the dole: that being a minimum living wage—Yours, etc., SUSAN HARRISON. June 13. 1982.
