Upset win ‘deserved’
NZPA Madrid Many neutral observers of the inaugural World Cup match said yesterday that Belgium deserved its 1-0 upset victory over the defending champion. Argentina. Some likened the Belgians to the great 1974 Dutch team and put them among the tournament favourites. The Spanish press praised Belgium's teamwork in Monday's game and played up
the Argentine striker. Diego Maradona's frustration. "Belgian strength overcomes Argentine technique,” said one headline'. ‘‘Belgium ruins the Maradona spectacle,” commented "El Correo Catalan.” The Brazilian coach, Tele Santana, and Real Madrid’s coach, Alfredo di Stefano, were among the few outside Argentina who said the defending champion deserved to win.
