N.Z. pair in speedway finals
The New Zealand speedway team of Ivan Mauger and Larry Ross has qualified for the final of the world pairs championship which will be held in Australia in December.
Mauger, a winner of the world individual crown on a record six occasions, and Ross finished second. behind the home pair from Denmark, in their semi-final at the Vojens Stadium, recently. The event was won by the experienced former world champion, Ole Olsen, and his new partner, Erik Gundersen, with 28 points. New Zealand scored 24 points for second, just holding out Finland (Kai Nemi) and Arni Koponen) by a point. For Mauger, now semi-
retired, the event was a considerably success. He played the dominate role, scoring 16 points, a total only matched by Olsen. Ross finished the meeting with a worthy eight points. The other semi-final at Prague in West Germany was won by the England pair, Peter Collins and Kenny Carter, with 29 points., They finished with a clear three-point lead over the defending world champion, United States (Bruce Penhall and Dennis Sigalos). Australia, hosting a world championship for the first time, gains an automatic place in the final. The other qualifiers are. England, United States, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, New' Zealand; and Finland.
