Hagley High School

Sir.—The Secondary Schools' Council’s report on accommodation in secondary schools upholds the principle of equality within our education system’ in emphasising that schools should share equally the declining rolls rather than having any one school closing. Hagley has special characteristics that no other school has or.

offers. Should the' Minister opt for closing Hagley. the. flow-on effect may mean possible closure of two or three other State schools with special char actenstics. resulting in fewer, yet larger, less specialised schools. Hagley's specialised courses attract students from wide-ranging areas — Ashburton. Kaikptira. Lincoln, Kaiapoi..etc. With no other schools able, to offer some adult day programmes or opportunity for approximately 3800 day and--evening students for commun-ity-oriented learning, these people become deprived of this valuable aspect of education. Girls' High and Hagley have entirely different problems, each to be solved without one becoming involved with the other. Both schools are essential to our education system — Yours, etc..
