Petrol prices likely to rise soon
PA Wellington Petrol prices are likely to rise soon, but the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch), will not say when. Responding to radio reports that he had “hinted" at a price increase. Mr Birch said yesterday that because of continuing changes in the price of crude oil. there would have to be an adjustment in the product price. "The pressure will finally be reflected in increases in product prices.” he said. Asked whether this "ad-
justment" would involve an increase in the price of petrol, or an increase in the petrol tax charged by the Government. Mr Birch’ said there would “not necessarily" be changes in taxation. The last price increase was in February, when charges rose 3c a litre, taking premium grade petrol to 64c a litre and standard grade to 61c. Diesel also rose 3.8 c to 48c a litre. - For premium grade petrol, this is about $2.91 a gallon.
