The economy
Sir,—On “Mainland Touch." Rodney Bryant told us that 80 Mercedes Benz cars were on order in Canterbury alone and that each of these had a price tag of $lOO,OOO. Further, there is a waiting list. This supports my assertion that the Muldoon administration is purely a Government of “haves” for “haves." It would be interesting to learn how many farmers and other professionals there are among the purchasers of these totally unnecessary but expensive status symbols. I know we will never find out, because that would be an invasion of privacy and the privacy of all professional classes is sacrosanct. Not so with the work force. Their income is forever under microscopes and the slightest trace of affluence rearing its ugly heard among the workers is squashed with the well-worn parrot screech of the "haves": "The country can't afford it!” — Yours, etc., ARTHUR MAY.
