N.Z. smoking and drinking
Sir,-1 take umbrage at Dr Richard Smiths article ("The Press," June 4) about smoking and drinking in New Zealand. Although he has only visited New Zealand twice in the last few years, I feel he is trying to "tar" us all with the same
> brush," when only a fraction of : the whole population is con- > cerned. I have read his article several times, and can find > nothing of a constructive • nature in it as to how to relieve the situation. I have friends working in the Alcohol Advisory Council and consider that they are doing an excellent job toward alleviating the sufferings of these afflicted people. In my estimation Dr • Richard Smith's criticism can ; only worsen, not help the prob- > lem. Let us at least give Sir ’ Leonard Thornton our whole--1 hearted support for what he is t trying to do. — Yours, etc., ) ETHEL SOTHERAN. ; June 4, 1982.
