Man arrested after fire

A man, aged 23, will appear in the District Court today, charged with arson after fire destroyed a 825,000 hay barn near Flaxton, North Canterbury, on Saturday night. The barn, 5000 bales of hay, and some farm implements were destroyed in the fire. Two units from the Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade and one from Kaiapoi attended the blaze on the property of Mr D. B. C. Allin, Bramley’s Road, Flaxton. The Rangiora police would like the occupants of a light beige Viva estate car whom they spoke to concerning the fire to get in touch with them as soon as possible. In Christchurch, the Fire Service was called to three suspicious fires in less than three hours, two at the same address, early yesterday morning. Units from the Central and Woolston fire stations attended. Another garage and storeroom complex was seriously damaged an hour later at 12 Henry Street, Linwood. Units from the Woolston and Central stations attended.
