Hagley High School's board of governors is concerned that the recent discussion of secondary school accommodation in Christchurch may be seen as a conflict between the interests of Hagley High School and Christchurch Girl’s High School. A statement made after the board's meeting on Friday evening said the last thing the board wanted was a contest between the claims of the two schools. The needs of all secondary schools in Christchurch had to be recognised. the statement said. Hagley High School and Christchurch Girls’ ' High School had played complementary roles in the central city for more than 100 years. The board's deputy chairman. Mr R. G. Thomson, said the board agreed with the recommendations of the Secondary School's Council, working party on secondary accommodation that both schools should continue to

carry out their present duties. The recognition by the working party of Hagley High School's special role gave the board particular satisfaction. The board was reluctant to comment on details of the proposed rebuilding programme for Christchurch Girls' High School but said that no board could proceed independently without regard to the interests of other schools, particularly with falling rolls. “The Hagley board has

been developing its planning for the last 10 years for the future of the school in terms of its changing role in relation to other schools in the city,” the statement said. “We are optimistic that this new role will continue to develop with regard to both the continuing education function for adults and the adolescent component which is the essential core of the school," said Mr Thomson. . The board felt confident ’that it had the support of other schools and the city as a whole, the statement said..
