Table tennis to Canty
Canterbury easily retained its South Island teams' championships at the interprovincial table tennis tournament in Christchurch
yesterday. The home province was unbeaten in the men's women's, boys' and girls' events, and dropped only a handful of games in its matches. The Canterbury women's team of Jan’Morris, the NewZealand champion. Pam Shadbolt. Thelma May and Monique Van der Aa d’id not lose any gafnes. The Canterbury men's team won 79 of its 84 games,,, with Maurice Burrowes. the top-ranked men’s player, unbeaten in the No. 1 position. Otago and Southland filled the other top positions with Otago second in both senior events and Southland second in the junior sections. The tournament was robbed of some glamour at senior level by the absence of leading players from both Otago and' Canterbury. Canterbury beat Otago. 102. in the final round of the men’s event, with the Otago No. 1. Simeon Cairns, figuring in both his team's points. The 20-year-old Dunedin man beat’ the Canterbury champion. Michael Prisk, 2117, 21-17,- and combined with Peter Lemalu to beat Prisk and John Gagliardi in the doubles. Cairns’ match with Burrowes was the highlight of the singles. Burrowes won, 16-21, 21-16, 21-18, after edging ahead of Cairns early in
the deciding set with some crisp serve-hit combinations. Burrowes led. 8-4 and 10-5, but Cairns blocked well and drew level at 17-17. Bur-
