After four weeks with an ankle in plaster, Shaun O’Leary, of Dunedin, had some good news yesterday — he was named as the New Zealand Judo Federation’s “Judoka of the Year.” O’L'feary, aged 24, tore muscle attachments in his foot during training. Although now out of the cast he was a spectator for the national championships in Christchurch at the weekend. The news of his award has

boosted his spirits and he hopes to resume training within a month. O’Leary, a second dan black belt and the assistant South Island coach, won a gold medal in the under-71 kg class when he represented New Zealand in the Oceania Judo Union championships in Fiji last year. He is a member of the Renshuden _club in Dunedin and is the present South Island champion in the under-78kg "weight group.
