Skifield open
The Treble Cone skifield, near Wanaka. is providing the only ski-ing in the South Island during the Queen's Birthday week-end. The managing director and chairman of the Treble Cone (Wanaka) Ski Field, Ltd, Mr R. G. Sinclair, said that about a metre of snow had fallen on the upper field and about 60cm in the car park on Friday evening. Two teams of operators working continuously for 36 hours had enabled the field to open yesterday for the
first day of the season. “Hundreds" of people skied at Treble Cone yesterday in “almost springish conditions” according to Mr Sinclair. The Treble Cone skifield normally opens for the season during the first week of July. This is the first time it has been open for the Queen's Birthday week-end. Both the Mount Hutt and Porter Heights skifields report a very good base of snow with another good fall required before ski-ing can begin.
