Good Way set to repeat last year’s win

Special correspondent Dunedin Good Way looks set to repeat his win of last year in the Birthday Handicap, the first leg of the Otago Racing Club’s T.A.B. double today. He hinted that he was on the verge of winning form when he came from far back for fourth over 1600 m at Riccarton last time out on May 22. Good Way has 57kg. 4.5 kg above the minimum. He carried 55kg, skg above the minimum to an easy win in the race last year. He has won the Heathcote Handicap (1800 m at the Grand National meeting in between times. Tom Cowan, who rode him to win last year, has the mount today. Myre May, a last-start winner over 2000 m at Rtccarton on May 19 on a soft track, should be capable of a bold showing. Her chance is boosted with the services of the in-form jockey, Jim Collett. Styline will warrant attention. He was running on late for fifth over 16Wm on Saturday and he will be admirably suited by the prevailing heavy track. Soaring High has winning form and the ability to handle heavy ground to recommend his chance in the Penfolds Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

He won over 1200 m on an easy track at Rangiora last time out on May 15 and was successful over 1400 m on soft footing at Riccarton a month earlier. Retep, placed behind Soaring High at Rangiora, showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals in a lower-grade event on Saturday and he could be a dangerous lightweight.
