Hobart Star likely winner at Ashburton

Hobart Star, the backmarker on 20m. is entitled to be a dominating favourite for the Queen's Birthday Stakes, first leg of the T.A.B. double at Ashburton today. The son of Timely’ Knight began racing in mtd-January at Washdyke and has been sparingly produced for three wins and five placings from eight appearances. His latest start was at Addington Raceway on May 7 when he made a field of C2 pacers look second-rate after leading from the 900 m. Hobart Star is one of the more exciting prospects among the more loosely-as-sessed three-year-olds in Canterbury. He will be opposed by some others almost as highly rated and will by no means have things his own way. Bold Ruler was one of the top-ranked in his age group in Canterbury last season, but he has suffered a series of setbacks since then. He had his first start for more than 12. months at Ashburton on Saturday. After being wide early, he sat in the open and battled away gamely for second to Steve's Chance. The race should have improved him and from the front, he could take beating.

Derby beat all but Wooden Heart on Saturday, making a late bid once clear. He has a big reputation and it will be surprising if he fails to show up.

Templar ( and Fern Bay both showed ability when they graduated from' maiden class on Saturday, with Templar making more appeal as a place prospect in this event.

Then there is the in-and-out Noble Shan, which at times has shown great potential; the talented fillies. Steady Way and Miss Bromac; and Dandy Blue, which has shown great speed although he is inclined to race erratically.

Betty Adios. Yankee Hall and Sioux form a likely trio in the second leg, the Bush Inn Handicap, which will be run over 3200 m.
