Mr Hickey faces stern test in steeples today

Special correspondent Auckland Mr Hickey will be a popular fancy today to round off the Great Northern double. Success again. in the Steeplechase, would get him into select company, no more than three horses these past 50-odd years having managed such an achievement. Streamline won the two big events. Hurdles and Steeplechase. 12 months apart in 1940 and 1941. but only Hit Parade (1956). Smoke Ring (1965) and Brockton 11971), since the 19205. took both races in the oneseason.

Mr Hickey will be tackling the 6400 m Great Northern Steeplechase, just about the most arduous jumping race anywhere, with the top weight of 68.5 kg — Ikg more than he won with in the Great Northern Hurdles on Saturday.

By comparison. Hit Parade carried 61.5 kg in his hurdles win. 70kg two days later when successful in the Steeplechase. Smoke Ring. 72kg then 62kg, Brockton. 57.5 kg and 57kg. Mr Hickey faces a big task. The Great Northern Steeplechase has been won. though, with more weight than he will carry. And not many Great ' Northern Hurdles victories have been achieved more decisively than his one on Saturday.

Mr Hickey came through the hurdles completely unharmed. The trainer. Graeme Sanders, had him at the Te Awamutu track yesterday morning for trotting exercise and a roll in the afternoon for a half-hour walk and expressed himself satisfied with the gelding's condition. His only real worry regarding today. Sanders said, was Mr Hickey's lack of experience of the Ellerslie country. Mr Hickey has had four steeplechases all told -

three in Melbourne and one at Tauranga — for two wins and two second placings. His only look at the Ellerslie country was when he shaped up last Tuesday in an impressive trial once round and a bit. over 15 fences. Besides Mr Hickey, the

field includes Patrone and Aurlada. the second and third placegetters last year behind Bean's Beau and such other strong stayers as Chief Ore. Husky and Mountain Gold, each a real possibility.
