Birnie wins U.S. race
Canterbury runners filled the first six’places in the Brentwood Wkm road running race in Los Angeles recently in the tirst race of the teams American series.
Tom Birnie won in 29 mins 225, setting a race record, while Alan Thurlow was second in 29:25. Eddie Gray (Greymouth) surprised with a bold run tor third in 29:44, heading off more favoured Chris Tobin (30:07). Warren Sheddan (30:09) and Brian Kennelly (30:14). John Sheddan finished ninth. Alan Sin-
clair fourteenth, and Bruce Rattray a below par fifteenth. The three women members of the team raced in the L'Eggs all women 10km race m New York, won by world cross country champion Grete Waitz (Norwaw in 31nun 50s. Lorraine Moller , ickland) finished fifth in 33:50. ■ai.u the best of Canterbury's trio nrmg Mary O'Connor, who was imrteentn in 34:54. Anne-Marie Keown was twenty-third in 35:31 and Margaret Walker thirty-first in 36:09.
