Poisoning of rabbits ‘successful’

PA Wellington Oat poisoning of rabbits in Central Otago in autumn was highly successful, says the chairman of the Agricultural Pest Destruction Council. Mr G. M. Findley. He was commenting on reports that the Undersecretary of Agriculture (Mr Austin) had said, that some recent eradication attempts in the region had been spectacularly unsuccessful. Mr Findley said that the council had checked with Mr Austin about his address to delegates at the National Party’s Otago-Southland divisional conference last month. “He has indicated that he intended to report the sue-.

cess of several recent rabbit control operations in Central Otago, and point out that some operations in problem ■areas in past years had not been as successful in terms of rabbit kills as they should have been.” Mr Findley said. The council was avzare of the serious rabbit problem in the Manorburn and Earnscleugh areas in Central Otago, he said. Control work had been planned for the autumn and winter of this year. Mr Austin told the conference that he hoped legislation would soon require a greater contribution from farmers and other landowners towards the control of pests.
