Vulcan detained
NZPA-Reuter Brasilia A British Vulcan bomber was intercepted in Brazilian airspace yesterday, escorted to Rio de Janeiro and disarmed on the ground, a Brazilian Foreign Ministry spokesman said. The Vulcan, intercepted 297 km south of Rio by FSB jet trainers, would be allowed to leave after being disarmed. Brazil did not believe that the plane had violated its airspace'because it had had technical problems. It did not think any official protest appropriate, he said. In Buenos Aires, the official Argentine news agency, Telam, said the plane had been heading for the Falkland Islands with a full load of bombs.
The Brazilian spokesman had no details of the weapons the plane was carrying. The British Defence Ministry said in London that the Vulcan had run out of fuel while on a maritime reconnaissance mission.
Britain has used Vulcans to bomb Argentine positions on the Falkland Islands from a base on Ascension Island in the South Atlantic, refuelling in mid-air.
