More than 5000 old car bodies in Christchurch will be fed into New Zealand’s only car flattener in the next two months. The flattener, which began work in Christchurch yesterday, is shown being loaded with two car bodies (top), one on top of the other. Below, the loader removes the compressed bodies. Manufactured in the
United States, the flattener is owned by Pacific Metal Industries. It has been working its way slowly up the South Island, gobbling up derelict and unwanted hulks. Once flattened, the bodies are much easier to transport. They are sent to Auckland, where they are shredded, and they then go to the Pacific Metal Industries steel mill to be melted down.
